Understanding the idea
Short daylight hours, cold temperatures and lower solar output put real constraints on winter growing in the UK. More heating is not automatically the best answer.
Five practical steps
- Choose the operating mode. Decide whether the goal is seasonal unheated growing, frost-protected propagation, cool-season production or warm actively heated crops.
- Start with suitable crops. Match crops to light and temperature; surviving the winter does not guarantee commercially meaningful harvests.
- Reduce heat demand first. Evaluate winter sun, glazing, insulation, thermal curtains, ventilation and the size of any warmed zone.
- Model electrical and thermal needs. Battery capacity should be matched against actual loads and dark-weather periods. A water tank moderates temperature but is not unlimited heat.
- Protect essential functions. Ventilation, frost protection, irrigation and any animal life-support need suitable safe-failure plans.
What to check
Actual performance depends on site and year. ‘Year-round’ must specify crops, temperatures, energy inputs and backups.
